International Sepecial Research Student Admission

1. Enrollment Capacity

About twenty.


2. Period of Enrollment

Starts in April or in October. The duration is usually six months to 12 months.


3. Study Contents

Students are expected mostly to undergo independent study under the supervision of an advisor, and to get prepared to be enrolled as a regular graduate students. Some preparatory courses as well as language training courses are provided.


4. Qualifications for Application

Applicants with foreign nationalities.


5. Application Period

  • Foreign nationals living in Japan
    • Those wishing to enroll in April
        October 1, 2015 to March 26, 2016
    • Those wishing to enroll in October
        April 1, 2016 to September 17, 2016
  • Foreign nationals living in other countries
    • Those wishing to enroll in April
        August 1, 2015 to December 25, 2015
    • Those wishing to enroll in October
        February 1, 2016 to June 30, 2016

6. Application Procedures

Applicants must submit the following documents to the admissions office within the stipulated application period.

  • All documents must be the original. If applicants cannot submit the original, they must submit an official copy of the document.
  • Please attach Japanese translations of documents if issued in other languages (alternatively, English and/or Chinese translations are also acceptable).
  1. Application form for a special research student (use the format as specified by KCGI).
  2. A photocopy of a university/college graduation certificate, or other documents that are equivalent to it.

  3. A certified copy of transcript of grades (issued by the relevant academic institution and placed in a sealed envelope).
  4. A recommendation letter from an academic advisor/professor or a supervisor/manager at worksites (use the format as specified by KCGI).
  5. The residence certificate (only for those living in Japan).
  6. A photocopy (both sides) of the resident card (only for those living in Japan).
  7. A certificate(s) of language proficiency (Japanese or English), such as TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS, Japanese proficiency test, J-TEST, etc.
  8. A research plan (use the format as specified by KCGI).
  9. A short essay in Japanese or English in 2-3 A4 pages.
  10. A medical certificate (use the format as specified by KCGI).
  11. A letter of guarantee affirming the ability to shoulder all costs while enrolled at the school (use the format as specified by KCGI).
  12. Documents describing the source of finances.
    (Copies of income statement and tax return receipts for past three years, or certificate of a scholarship.)
  13. A photocopy of the applicant’s passport.
  14. A photocopy of the applicant’s bank book (only for those living in Japan).
  15. Other personal information (only for those living in Japan; use the format as specified by KCGI).
  16. 800 JPY postal stamp (only for those living in Japan).
  17. An application fee of 30,000 JPY.

7. Selection Procedure

Selection is based on document review, contents of a short essay (in Japanese or English), and an interview. The schedule for the interview will be informed to the applicant. The decision as to acceptance will be mailed to the applicant.


8. School Fees

The school fees are as follows:

  1. The tuition fee includes costs for facilities and other items, including textbooks for the Japanese language course.
  2. The figures do not include some other miscellaneous expenses that should be borne individually, such as accidents insurance.
  3. When the applicant is notified of acceptance for admission, the school fees must be paid to the bank account indicated in the below, within the stipulated period.

9. Pre-evaluation of Admission Credentials

In addition to the documents specified in section 6, the following documents are required for those who have not finished 4-year university/college programs.

  1. Application for pre-evaluation of admission credentials (use the format as specified by KCGI).
  2. Certification of graduation issued by the relevant academic institution.
  3. A certified copy of the transcript of grades issued by the relevant academic institution.
  4. Other additional documents for reference (optional).
    Applicants may submit additional materials (such as those for skill qualification, foreign language ability, etc.) for pre-evaluation of admission credentials.

  2. The handling charge for money transfer must be borne by the applicant. If paid from foreign countries, the handling charge for the Japanese bank (JPY 1,500) is needed, which must also be borne by the applicant. Please add this amount to the application fee, therefore 31,500 JPY altogether.
  3. Submit a copy of the “Approved bank remittance slip”, together with other application documents.
  4. Please use the applicant’s name as the sender of the bank remittance.
